In this three-volume collection, 30 songs by Pauline Viardot – in German, French, and Russian versions – are compiled based on texts by German poets. These corresponding song lyrics were highly appreciated in Germany. Turgenev and Pohl read these works in the Viardot’s salon in Baden-Baden. They were probably the ones who suggested to Pauline Viardot to set them to music in the original language.
